This was taken on a gloriously sunny day in Cumbria (the Lake District) as we hiked up alongside Shoulthwaite Gill. At this point we were close to Iron Crag and looking back down the valley towards Skiddaw and Blencathra. From here the walk became more rugged and the path disappeared entirely, but despite the uneven – and sometimes precarious – state of the ground, we had a thoroughly satisfying day on the hills without encountering another soul.
These stunning black and yellow dragonflies were constant companions on one of our walks in Cumbria, and this one landed close to the path and stayed still long enough to be photographed. It seems to be studying me just as intently as I was focusing on it!
